Another great movie from Emir Kusturica

Five cent tour:

Steve Ballmer: Will his stubborn vision revitalize Microsoft by taking over Yahoo. Or is he just an ass?

Emir Kusturica

Today, I saw yet another fantastic movie by Emir Kusturica, Life is a Miracle (2004). Here’s a German trailer for the movie:

…………………………………………….

The orignial title is Zivot je cudo. This is the third movie by Kusturica I’ve seen. The other two were Underground and Black Cat, White Cat. Having enjoyed three of Kusturica’s movies, I’m grateful to my friend, Mihai Coman, for introducing me to Kusturica’s work.

A great and dramatic story that finishes with a happy ending- it can feed that faint spark of hope inside of me. That is important to me. Because I too need fuel, sometimes.

But these three movies by Kusturica are not just good for the happy endings; the three I have seen are more enchanting and amusing than the Princess Bride.

Kusturica has a knack for reproducing the uncanniness of everyday life. For example, a clumsy dog jumps on a table to grab a piece of meat and makes a mess, but no one cares. It’s just scenery. These are the insignificantly charming things that happen in our everyday.

Sometimes, Kusturica’s animals have more than personality; they are unheimliche (something familiar but strange at the same time). Perhaps, unheimliche is the best description of his characters and story.

But Kursturica also has an instinct for synchronicity that allows him to recreate the magic that makes life meaningful and worthwhile. In Life is a Miracle, there is an annoying donkey that seems to be just more uncanny scenery. In fact, she saves the day.

Microsoft’s Unsolicited Bid on Yahoo

Steve Ballmer opened up a can of Borg-style whoop ass on Friday. Is resistance futile?

……………………………………………………….

……………………………………………………….

Supposedly, Yahoo’s board of directors are considering Microsoft’s offer. But if resistance is futile, can Yahoo’s instinct for innovation survive assimilation? Or would a Microsoft takeover only accelerate what seems to the industry to be a gentle diminishment of the brand?

Is the not-so-hostile bid about online advertising revenues? Search technologies? Or both?

Or, is this $44 Billion bid an artifice for peers to consolidate advantages and confidence in the face of the economic slowdown and investors’ fears?

If slowdown and fear, what will Google do? Grab AOL?

Gabby says “woof!” she’s like to rip some galbi off your plate and make a mess all across the floor just for some scenery.
